Lady Gaga: the nude body as scenography

“Her body is not a territory to conquer, it’s rather a stage on which you can set up a new scenography each time,” says Francesco Bonami of pop phenomenon Lady Gaga. Those few words sum up, in a neat little package, what it is that might just separate Gaga from other artists willing to pose nude for the sake of fashion, or art, or fun. Whether you like her music or not, one must concede that she uses her body as a landscape for things that can be interpreted and read into and thus could easily be classed as art – or attempts at art even if not always successful ones.
For L’Uomo Vogue’s first issue of 2012 Gaga’s “butcher’s season seems to be over” and instead of any raw meat her costume is a mix of bare breasts and machine parts. Seems Inez and Vinoodh’s black and white portrait has been touched by Arnie’s exoskeletal Terminator hand.
